Access Advertising & Public Relations is pleased to announce that John Carlin will join the company as executive vice president on Dec. 1. Carlin is co-anchor and managing editor of WSLS-TV, western Virginia's NBC affiliate, and co-anchors the Fox 10 p.m. news. He brings more than 25 years of media experience to his new role.

Tony Pearman (R), Access Chief Creative Officer welcomes John Carlin at a news conference announcing his departure from WSLS-TV.

"We are thrilled that a journalist of John's talent has chosen our firm as he transitions from broadcast news to public relations," says Todd Marcum, Access president. "For more than two decades, John has been part of an award-winning news team at WSLS. His knowledge of media relations, ability to work on tight deadlines and exceptional communication skills will translate very well into our public relations efforts."

John Carlin joined WSLS-TV as weeknight anchor in 1987, moving to Roanoke from Richmond where he served as weekend anchor for WTVR, a sister station then owned by Park Broadcasting. He co-anchored the evening newscast with Monica Shuman, becoming managing editor of the station two years later when Shuman moved to Raleigh. He currently co-anchors the 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 11 p.m. with Karen McNew and the Fox Ten O'Clock news with Becky Freemal.

In 2007, Carlin and his news team won a Peabody Award, an Emmy, and multiple regional and national awards for coverage of the Virginia Tech shootings. He won two previous Emmy awards as well as awards from the Virginia Associated Press, Edward R. Murrow awards, and Media General's D. Tennant Bryant Awards for stories he covered during his tenure.

Widely known in the region as an avid runner and cyclist, Carlin has completed more than two dozen long distance bicycle races, triathlons, and marathons, including two Boston marathon finishes. He has served as an Olympic Torchbearer for the Atlanta and Salt Lake City Olympics and helped bring the Tour Dupont (and a little known cyclist named Lance Armstrong) to the Roanoke and Blacksburg region during the 1990s.

Carlin also serves on the boards of the YMCA and St. Francis of Assisi Service Dog Foundation and has taught broadcast journalism courses at Virginia Tech. In 1996, he received the national Michael Schoenbrun Award from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for his exceptional years of service to that organization.

As part of an overall transition, Terri Jones, principal of the public relations practice, will step back to part-time status at the firm in 2009, continuing to work with the team as John assumes the leadership role for the public relations division. This planned move will allow Jones to fulfill some family commitments while transitioning to her new role.

Jones, whose arrival in 2003 began Access' public relations division, was chosen Agency Executive of the Year by PRNews magazine in 2007. She also was named 2007 Advertising Person of the Year by the Advertising Federation of Western Virginia.

"John's experience as an award-winning journalist is an ideal fit for our firm," says Jones. "Many of the Mid-Atlantic's top public relations firms were founded by broadcast journalists whose media experience made them outstanding writers and communicators. John's an exceptional talent and we feel very fortunate to have him at AccessPR."

Access Advertising & Public Relations, the largest advertising and public relations agency west of Richmond, has won more than 400 awards for creative and public relations excellence during its 12-year history. In early 2009, the company will move into a newly renovated 17,000 sq. ft. historic building at 701 Patterson, Roanoke.

"Access has been fortunate to enjoy recognition of our work while helping our local, regional, and national clients grow as well," says Tony Pearman, Access' chief creative officer. "After more than a decade of growth, we're entering a new era with John's arrival and our upcoming move to new corporate offices. It's an exciting time for our company."
